About our cold hardy grape vines

Our bare root grape vines are grown from dormant hardwood cuttings, at least two nodes long, rooted and grown in our outdoor nursery. Our cuttings are collected during the winter/early spring from healthy, vigorous, mature vines, from vineyards in Aylmer, and Montebello, North of Ottawa River, in Quebec.

We are a small family run operation that specializes in cold hardy grape vines originally developed by the private breeding efforts of late Elmer Swenson, the grape breeding program at the University of Minnesota, and the Technology Production Program in Horticulture and Environment at Institut de Technologie Agroalimentaire from Saint-Hyacinthe (Québec).

About our nursery

The Voloaca Nursery operation is managed by Constantin and Maria Voloaca. Both of us have a Horticultural Degree, and Constantin has extensive experience and knowledge in Viticulture.

Constantin:

“I was born and raised in one of the most important grape and wine production regions in Romania. Beginning with my early years, I used to help my parents and grandparents in the vineyard performing many specific operations in grape production, gaining valuable experience and a feeling of what the vine grape needs in order to have healthy vines and a constant harvest.

During my studies in a Viticulture-specialized High School, and then in a Horticulture University program, I gained more experience and knowledge in grape vines propagation, planting, dormant and “green” pruning, training, and pest management.

After graduating with the Highest Honours, I was a manager for seven years in a Romanian vineyard. The size of it all? Almost 250 acres! It was a lot of work, a lot of personnel, a lot of machineries, a lot of problems, and a lot of decisions to make. My knowledge and my experience in Viticulture were really tested. But then again, I learned a lot.

Despite the fact that the winter is not so harsh in Romania compared with Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec, we still had to deal with frost damage and compensation for fertile buds, winter protection, and cultural methods applied to grape wines to increase their frost resistance.

Now that I am even more familiar with grape production in colder climates, I am endeavoring to apply all my experience and knowledge to the constant improvement of cold-climate grape production technology".
